Interior Designers and Their Dogs

Here at Studio XO, we sure love our pets and have houses full of them. We believe that the heart of a home is the inhabitants, and that includes the pets, so we are not afraid to incorporate our furry friends into our designs. Here are some of our favorite products and design tips to keep everyone happy.

Pet beds can become somewhat of an accessory in homes so we like to use coordinating textures and fabrics. We are loving the Animals Matter Ruby Dog Bed. These are not only cozy and perfect for snuggling, they are also great for older dogs that need the extra orthopedic comfort and support.

When you want to allow the pups on couch for movie night cuddles but don’t want the evidence there the next day, try using these throw blankets. They are super durable and incredibly cozy. And Faux-fur throws always look chic in the winter. Splurge on this Ivory Mink Couture Faux Fur Throw Blanket or this more affordable Neutral Snow Leopard Faux Fur Throw option. Both are sure to look fabulous while in use or draped across the back of a sofa (put the dog on it for an additional pop of cuteness). Both can be washed and dried at home.

When it comes to “pet-friendly” living spaces a lot of it comes down to the fabrics used. We want spaces to feel comfortable, livable and inviting, not only for the pets, but for you. For fabric, Cognac leather has to be one of our favorite, no-stress upholstery choices. Cleaning is easy when you can just wipe it down and it’s one of the more odor resistant materials out there. When the material starts to get natural scratches, it’s still looks great. Another great option is to use outdoor fabric because it is durable AND stain resistant. Going with a printed, patterned fabric will also help hide stains. Heavier textured fabrics allow for dog hair to get in. Of course, depending on the color of your dog, some fabrics will show more hair than others. It may seem obvious but still worth mentioning, with dark haired dogs, stay with darker fabrics, with light haired dogs, opt for lighter colored fabrics. Anything you pick should be durable and easy to clean.

Over the years we have learned that dogs love the cozy feel of carpet as much as we do. It’s soft on their paws and provides traction for playing. When choosing carpet in your pet friendly home, opt for acrylic or Polypropylene blends like this option from Stanton. Prints and textures do wonders for disguising stains. Choose a lower carpet over a deep or shag or you might find fido marking territory. Stainmaster has come out with an entire line dedicated to pets. These designs will hold up against your dog, and they come with a lifetime warranty.

Dyson Inc.

We can’t live without this Dyson Carpet Cleaner. You’ll never have to call a professional carpet cleaner again. Trust us when we say it is worth the investment. They also have a handheld version for smaller messes.

These wonderfully warm scented candles will add a touch of ambiance to your chilly winter nights and also serve as great odor eliminators. We are loving the LAFCO Candle, White Snowdrop Ltd Edition for it’s delicate floral bouquets scent and attractive display. We also really enjoy the Diptyque Baies/Berries’ Black Candle in a mouth-blown black glass container with a shiny finish that reflects the candle flame. This one’s scent recalls a bouquet of roses and black currant leaves.

Give the air an aromatic renewal with Nest Holiday Reed Diffuser. Notes of pomegranate, Mandarin orange, pine and clove combine with cinnamon, vanilla and amber in this aromatic reed diffuser will fill the air. We also love Antica Farmacista Prosecco Diffuser with top notes of Satsuma citrus balance with subtle floral notes of muguet. Apricot and passionfruit complement the sweetness of sugared black currant. A crisp scent celebrating the sparkling effervescence of Prosecco and Champagne.

Keep your pet looking sharp with Paco Pet Collars. Each of these beautiful collars are handmade using the highest quality materials on the market. Latigo leather, the same leather used in horse tack, is the base for all products and is specially treated to withstand all weather conditions, meaning that every Paco Collars product will stand the test of time.  They are completely customizable, with tons of different designs and color combinations. They also have custom ID tags which can be assembled onto your pets collar, eliminating the need to have excess tags hanging from dog or cats neck.

Living with dogs can sometimes pose a challenge. They might get in to your things or steal your bed. Two things have to happen in order to happily live with dogs. Training them & relax. When you live with dogs, this means everything can’t be perfect all of the time. When accidents happen, you wipe them up, clean them up and forget about them and go on living with your furry companions happily!
